NDVI drone vs NDVI camera: do you need multispectral?

Buying NDVI capability usually means a dedicated multispectral drone or an add-on camera. Before spending on either, check what decisions you actually need to make.

When a multispectral camera is the right call

  • Research protocols that need calibrated, absolute index values
  • Comparisons across seasons, farms or sensors
  • Red-edge indices for specific agronomic models

When RGB is enough

Most in-season decisions are ranking decisions: which zone to scout, sample or treat first. Relative vigour within a field answers these, and an RGB camera plus a model trained on paired NDVI samples can provide it.

The cost of each path

  • Multispectral: extra hardware, panel calibration each flight, heavier processing
  • RGB with Nabhya: the drone you already fly, one API call per frame
