Reading a vegetation stress map.

A stress map is only useful if it changes what someone does in the field this week. Here is how to read the output and convert it into an action list.

The colour ramp is relative

Green through yellow to red is a ranking of this field against itself, not an absolute health score. Red does not mean the crop is dying; it means those pixels sit in the weakest part of this frame's distribution. A uniformly excellent field will still show red somewhere — that is the point.

Management zones

Zones are cut on percentiles of the vigour field, which keeps them stable across scenes with different lighting or crop stages. The bottom decile is your scouting target: small enough to walk, large enough to be a real pattern rather than noise.

Canopy cover

Canopy cover reports the share of the frame that is actually crop. It is the sanity check on everything else — a block with low cover early in the season has an establishment problem, not a vigour problem, and the two need different responses.

Non-crop pixels are excluded, not guessed

Soil, water, roads, bunds and buildings are segmented out and reported separately, so they do not drag the vigour distribution around. The analysed-pixel percentage tells you how much of the submitted frame the index actually covers.

Turning it into a scouting plan

  • Start at the largest contiguous red patch, not the darkest single pixel
  • Check whether stress follows an irrigation line, a slope or a field edge — the shape usually names the cause
  • Ground-truth before prescribing inputs; the map tells you where, not why
  • Re-fly after the intervention and compare the zone shape, not the raw values
